Biography:
During the last four years Gert-Jan Prins, living in Amsterdam, established himself as one of the central electronic performers in improvised music. His unique self-developed electronic system uses radio- and transmittertechnology, and creates strong noises with great physical energy. It was the magic of radio that inspired Prins to start "seriously soldering" back in 1976, at the same time as he was playing drums. Although he continued to play drums in a variety of Improv projects through the 80s and into the early 90s, Prins finally had the bright spark of combining his electronic knowledge with his musical endeavours some 20 years later, when he was invited to create a group composition for Quartetto New Amsterdam. There was a crossover period when Prins was playing electronics and drums simultaneously, but since 1998 he has devoted himself solely to his circuitry. This isn't music as we generally know it, but it does utilize a technical structure that can be perceived as a nonlinear musical sound experience. It's not trying to put the listener into some special state that is supposed to tell you something. It's a direct impetus.
Some text was taken from a feature on Prins in Wire, January 2003.
