Yannis Kyriakides was born in Cyprus in 1969, emigrated with his family to England in 1975, and has been living in The Netherlands since 1992. He has studied at York University (UK) and the Royal Hague Conservatory (NL) with Louis Andreissen, and has collaborated on several projects with the maverick electronic music pioneer Dick Raijmaakers. His musical language synthesizes disparate sound sources and often explores spatial and temporal experience. Recent large scale works include an electronic opera for ZTHollandia on Spinoza 'The Thing Like Us', a music-text-video piece for the ASKO ensemble 'Subliminal: the Lucretian Picnic', a BBC commission 'Lab Fly Dreams' for Icebreaker Ensemble (UK) and Orkest de Volharding (NL), the Buffer Zone, an electronic chamber opera for Festival aand de Werf, and a new opera for FNM der Staatsoper Stuttgart 'Escamotage'.
His music has been performed around the world in many of the major music festivals and prizes have included the International Gaudeamus Composition Prize 2000 for 'a conSPIracy cantata'.
He is also active as an improvser (live processing) , notably with Andy Moor (Red v Green) with whom he founded and runs the electronic music label Unsounds.
